I can’t deny that Christmas is a stressful time of year – there’s so much to do and there’s so much pressure to do it all and make it the best year EVER! But, meticulous planning, buying, wrapping (inevitably forgetting something and emergency re-gifting) aside – I luuuurve this time of year!
Particularly with little people and the magic that brings. As I write, it’s even snowing!
I’m seriously excited for Christmas this year (not least because last year was ruined by my poor sister-in-law ending up in A&E with sepsis when we should have been eating our turkey and
getting pished pretending not to mind I couldn’t drink because I was pregnant.)
I don’t often take part in these tags (time constraints), but I’m taking it pretty easy this month and I’m doing this one just for fun! With thanks to Lauretta from Home and Horizon for the tag.
1. What’s Your Favourite Christmas Movie?
Funnily enough I was asking on my Facebook page for suggestions just last night! I love Miracle on 34th Street, but really, I just binge on every Christmas film I can while it’s acceptable.
I’m loving that I have a partner in crime now, but it will be even better when she realises it doesn’t have to be animated to be awesome…
2. Have You Ever Had a White Christmas?
Possibly as a very young child, but I don’t remember for sure. I’m hoping this will be the year…
3. Where Do You Usually Spend Your Holiday?
Usually at my mum’s house with all the family, sometimes at my hubby’s mum’s. This year we’re going to my brother’s house to be with his tribe and I can’t wait – I’m expecting a very special day with all of our little ones together.
4. What’s Your Favourite Christmas Song?
I have two; they are:
Merry Christmas Everybody, Slade
I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day, Wizard
Anybody who disagrees is wrong.
5. Do You Open Any Presents On Christmas Eve?
Are you mad? Santa doesn’t come till Christmas Eve night!
6. Can You Name All of Santa’s Reindeer?
Yep! Donner, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Blitzen, Vixen, Comet, Cupid. Mandatory when you have little ones, no?
7. What Holiday Traditions Are You Looking Forward to This Year?
Well, the only real tradition we’ve started I was not able to continue with this year sadly… Up to now, we’ve always had a cheese board with all the trimmings (fruit, crudités, chutney and bread) – plus a bottle of port to wash it down, naturally. With my elimination diet that’s not been possible, but there are other traditions we’re starting instead:
We’re having fun with our elf, Snowflake, and I can’t wait to give my big girl her Christmas Eve box which is something we’ve not done before. Inside will be the usual books and films you’d expect to find – and I’ll be adding matching Christmas dresses for myself and Pixie! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get one to fit Elfin, but Pixie is struggling with jealousy at the moment so I think she’ll appreciate something special just for us.
I actually think she’ll lose her tiny mind over them.
8. Is Your Christmas Tree Real or Fake?
With mini humans in the house, and given the fact that any misadventure will reflect badly on us as parents, we’ve kept to artificial for the time being.
And I resent it being called fake – no beautifully decorated Christmas tree is fake!
9. What’s Your Favourite Holiday Treat/Food/Sweet?
I do love a proper coffee float (learn how to create the perfect one here!). Alas, that’s one more thing I’ll be forgoing this year…
10. Be Honest, Do You Prefer the Giving or Receiving of Gifts?
Well, it really depends – I have a funny thing about both. I think I’d prefer presents not to be exchanged at all, as I really dislike everything about the concept. I find it wasteful on several levels, I think it encourages excess and overindulgence in terms of finances and diet. For me, it detracts from the lovely bits. (We’re not even doing a Christmas list with our children, because it promotes entitlement!)

11. What’s The Best Christmas Present You Ever Received?
Oh, I have several – my husband is very good – but the very best is this:
He once bought me a stunning collection of books including a dictionary and thesaurus, which I’d seen in a shop window during a weekend break. They’re bound in seal skin and the edges of the pages are gold leaf.
He tracked them down when we got home because I’d remarked what a precious thing they’d be to own.
I dread to think what he paid for them (they were not even for sale!), but when I opened that present I was blown away. Huge overindulgence, but one that I very much appreciate.
12. What’s Your Dream Place to Visit For the Holiday Season?
Trick question, surely? Lapland, of course.
13. Are You a Pro Present Wrapper Or Do You Fail Miserably?
It comes down to time. I can be either, and when I no longer have tiny demanding children, I expect I’ll revert to being a pro.
14. Most Memorable Christmas Memory?
Easy… It involved a very rude card and an inappropriate game of Cranium. For the full story head over to Absolutely Prabulous where I gave her the deets last year!
15. What Made You Realise the Truth About Santa?
I really don’t remember, I just know I was devastated! I will keep the magic alive for my two for as long as possible, even if it does mean lying to them.
16. What Makes the Holidays Special For You?
Children, magic, festive cheer. Awesome tunes that are only permitted for six weeks each year!
I’m passing on the tag to:
Donna at What the Redhead Said;
Mim at Love From Mim;
Cassie at Gorgeous George’s Mama;
Sophie at Life As Mrs D.
I’d love to hear your Christmas traditions in the comments – and whether you agree about the best Christmas tune. (Just remember that any other choice is incorrect. 😉 )
