We received our Space Journey Subscription Boxes for Children in exchange for our (Pixie’s) honest opinion.
Pixie takes my breath away often; sometimes with her wit, other times with her capacity for defiance – but mostly with her ambition and steely determination. Some would call those attributes childish innocence, but if I encourage her to build on those and work hard to make them a reality, then perhaps it’s not inevitable that her wild, crazy dreams will never come to fruition. Maybe, it’s on me to ensure she continues to pursue them with the same single-minded will and strength of character that she exhibits today.
My three year old daughter wants to be an astronaut, and I will not deter her.
From the first time she said it, I’ve told her she’ll have to work hard – but I’ve allowed her to believe it’s a possibility, and I like to think that’s the beginning of making it her reality. When Geo Journey asked us to review their new kids subscription and I discovered that one of them is aimed at space travel and includes an astronaut kit, I was sold.
What’s Included in the Space Journey Subscription Boxes for Children?
The initial kit contained:
- Space suitcase;
- Personalised letter;
- Mission log book;
- Astronaut passport;
- Activity booklet;
- Travel ticket on a string;
- Astronaut in training wristband.
That sounds like a lot – and it is. The ‘suitcase’ is essentially a small satchel, decorated with a space theme, and it’s fantastic quality. It’s large enough to hold all the items you’ll receive over the course of your membership, and it looks very smart. Pixie loves it.
The subscription is aimed at children aged four to ten, and I’d say that Pixie (coming up four) is just a little shy of getting the most out of it – I struggle slightly to hold her attention whilst reading her personalised letter to her, and the activities are a bit beyond her right now. But certainly for old children this is a fantastic idea, and I love that it’s something we can put away and revisit with Pixie when she’s a little older if we choose to.
Age aside, Pixie loves receiving post (don’t we all when it’s not bills?), and she happily sits and sifts through the photos and paraphernalia which come with her subscription each month. I love that the kit is the perfect blend of reality and fantasy, simultaneously encouraging learning and make believe.
The quality of the items you’ll receive are surprisingly high – this is no flimsy magazine with pieces of paper or card which will rip or fall apart. The articles are hard-wearing and will be long-lasting, so that your child can come back to them again and again. Plus Geo Journey actually offer two different subscriptions: the space option we chose, and an explorer option for our humble planet.
If you’re in the market for a superior alternative to a magazine or a toy which also happens to be fun and educational, this is perfect and would make a wonderful gift.
