Katie has kindly gifted me a review copy of her new book, A Little Pick Me Up: Shining a Light on Your Darkest Emotions, which focusses on women’s health and wellness – an area that’s becoming of more and more relevance and importance to me as my daughters grow.

I’ve known Katie as an online friend/colleague for a while, so I’m thrilled for her and envious* in equal measure that she’s realised what is an ambition for us both: an actual, physical published book!

I wasn’t completely surprised by Katie’s book; she’s a fabulous and wise lady, so I knew it would be brilliant, and  she’s a huge advocate of women’s health and wellness – plus she’d hinted at what the subject matter was. But though it didn’t come as a great shock, it impressed me nonetheless. Katie’s writing is insightful, eloquent, and often quite beautiful.

I’ve personally been working towards a more positive life over the last few years, and Katie’s book spoke to me:

Lack is the root cause of your jealousy, which is why gratitude saves the day… replace woe is me with ‘wow is me!and watch your life improve.

One of the ways I’ve made real progress (for my anxiety rather than jealousy), is by making time to be actively grateful. I previously had a regular post each week dedicated to it; last year I had a monthly challenge on the blog; I’ve written about it extensively.

It works. I know because it’s worked for me.

With that in mind, I was curious to see what else Katie would be talking about, and whether any of it would strike a chord and help me to…think better, live better, or feel better I suppose. (Spoiler: yes, yes, and yes.)

Katie’s book is split up into seven different chapters which sound negative – but of course they all contain powerfully positive messages. In addition to the above quote about jealousy, I loved this:

Why I Adore A Little Pick Me Up

If I had to sum up Katie’s book in a single word it would be: poignant. That’s why I love it so much – every vital subject related to women’s health and wellness is so painfully, exquisitely astute that you can’t help but be deeply affected and inspired.

And at the end of the day, that’s the reason all writer’s write: to stir people. How could I feel anything else but thrilled for and envious* of my friend? She’s nailed it.
