When it comes to health and fitness, why should you be more interested in your body measurements than weight loss?

Essentially, muscle weighs more than fat.

Tracking the numbers on the scales without any context only tells half a story. It’s important to consider your muscle mass too, and consider how your clothes are fitting. It’s very feasible for clothes to become looser, while the numbers on the scales increase.

Therefore, measuring yourself every few weeks will help to provide a more accurate picture of your overall health than simply recording the number on the scales.

It might now be common knowledge that poor sleep can contribute to weight gain, but did you know it can also affect athletic performance?

While working out might be important for both fitness goals and healthy in general (it is!), there’s something else even more vital to weight loss success.

You can be super fit and even capable of running 10 miles before breakfast, but if you don’t eat right then you’re still never losing those extra pounds.

Trust me as someone who has previously been overweight, it’s simple maths. And maths don’t lie…

Calories in, calories out.

You can be regularly running those 10 miles, but if you’re going home and replacing those calories with a hard-earned treat – guess what? Yep: you won’t lose.

You need to be in a calorie deficit, and that can be hard to accomplish if you’ve built unhealthy habits around your diet.

That’s where planning and tracking meals can be the difference between failure and triumph.

It can help with:

  • Providing structure and removing the need to think about meals each day/week, which can be enough to throw you off;
  • Helping you see progression, and thus reinforcing new healthy habits;
  • Retaining focus and motivation.

Other benefits include:

This is where tracking your diet can be super useful – if you utilise it properly it can be very effective at preventing mindlessly consuming those extra unnecessary calories!

Use a Workout Schedule and Fitness Log

Creating a workout schedule and literally blocking out specific times for exercise is a great strategy by itself to get you moving and to help you stick to your goals. (Don’t forget to allow at least one rest day, though daily exercise is fine if your workouts are less intense or you plan for active recovery.)

While it may sound like the same thing, using a workout tracker to log your sessions upon completion is actually a separate but equally useful strategy, called the Habit Loop.
