They say ‘mum sets the tone in the home’, and I completely buy into that – which is why it’s so important that I take care of my own mental health and wellbeing in order that I can provide what our family needs too.

What is Wellbeing?

Wellbeing is multi-faceted. It means taking care of yourself in all ways, including your emotional, mental, and physical health. To feel content it’s important not to neglect any of these areas of your life. 

Naturally, when you’re a mum to small children it’s not always practical to take time out for yourself – which makes it all the more important!

Especially since wellbeing and positivity go hand in hand, and without meeting your own needs, it’s difficult to embrace positivity. 

So, while lack of time, sleep, and autonomy can be incredibly draining, something I found helped me was taking ownership of and responsibility for my own wellbeing and positivity:

Happiness is a choice; positivity is a mindset; gratitude is the path to both.

With a simple shift in mindset, we find ourselves becoming more positive, grateful, and ultimately more fulfilled.

What is Self-Development and Self-Improvement?

Self development and self improvement involve exercises that encourage us to become more self-aware and allow us to recognise and heal from old or enduring wounds.

The reality is, we are all works in progress.

The concept is that in actively working on these areas and employing positive strategies, we can enhance our experience of life.

It’s not (necessarily) about making fundamental changes to circumstances, but more about learning to reframe.

By appreciating the good we have around us and choosing to focus on those things rather than what we perceive to be missing, our lives become enriched.

With a simple shift in mindset, we find ourselves becoming more positive, grateful, and ultimately more fulfilled.

Self Development and Emotional Wellbeing

Personal growth and emotional wellbeing go hand in hand. The reality is, we are all works in progress; our growth is never ‘finished’ and our emotional wellbeing is dynamic.

This is why it’s important to think about self improvement as a longterm strategy.

It’s not enough simply to work through a single activity and say you’re done – even if old issues are resolved, new ones can crop up.

By committing to ongoing personal growth, you’re selecting a lifestyle which facilitates and underpins your emotional wellbeing not just today, but in the future too.

if we put the work in to establish a better baseline of positivity and wellbeing, we’ll hone and refine our coping skills for life’s inevitable difficulties.

I’ve never been more aware of the truth of this idea than when watching my daughter grappling with strong emotions.

It’s so clear that when she’s having a hard time, the moment has passed and it’s too late to use any specific strategy to bring her immediate calm and relief – by this point she has to be allowed to feel those big feelings and work all the way through them.

If I want to help her to become more resilient, we need to put the work in when she’s in a relaxed frame of mind. That’s when it’s beneficial to spend the time cultivating tools and techniques that she can draw on the next occasion she’s struggling with frustrations, etc.

The same goes for adults: if we put the work in to establish a better baseline of positivity and wellbeing, we’ll hone and refine our coping skills for life’s inevitable difficulties, whatever they may be.
