Using a consistent theme throughout each month of your bullet journal is a great way to produce a cohesive and put together aesthetic.

It also helps practically for organisation, and when flipping through so that you can very quickly and easily see which sections belong together, within each month.

If you’re new to bullet journaling you may be wondering how to bring a theme together, and if you’ve been journaling for a while you may simply be looking for inspiration. Either way you’ll find lots of ideas here for every month and season of the year!

A theme can be created in a variety of ways.

Before we get creative, let’s dig into how and where to use a bullet journal theme to make the most of your journal.

What Are Bullet Journal Themes?

A bullet journal theme is essentially a design or specific elements of a design used for decorating a section of your journal. Typically it would last throughout a month, and then change for the following month.

A theme can be created in a variety of ways, for example it can be focused on a particular season, holiday, or colour. It can then be implemented by repeating the same:

  • Doodling technique
  • Fonts
  • Weekly layout
  • Using the same colour pens or washi tape

Do You Need to Use a Bullet Journal Theme?

No, you absolutely do not have to use a theme in your journal.

Personally, I love them because they’re an easy way to coordinate the pages in a journal, an aesthetic I love. But I’m just one person and I didn’t start out using themes in my bullet journal. In fact, when I first started I was very much just figuring things out through trial and error, and a lot of what I did early on does not look very pro at all!

This is totally normal, and really the only way to find your own groove.

Explore, play, and have fun!

So, if you’re brand new to bujo, then you’re already a step ahead of when I got started. It’s important to remember there’s only one rule when it comes to bullet journaling:

There are no rules with bullet journaling!

If you’re curious or inspired by the idea of themes, then this post is for you. But there is no pressure to use one for every month, or for every week within a month. Or ever.

Just explore, play, and have fun!

Where Can I Find Bullet Journal Theme Ideas?

Well, hopefully there are enough in this post to keep you busy for a while! There are also many ideas on social media; try checking on Pinterest and Instagram for inspo.

But if you’re looking for unique ideas that are personal to you, you can take inspiration from all around you. What better way than to simply incorporate all your favorite things!

How to Use Bullet Journal Themes

If you decide a bullet journal theme is for you, there are lots of ways to produce that cohesive look – you just have to find one that appeals!

Which can actually be easier said than done! Since there are so many options, it can be an intimidating process, especially if you’re not sure which techniques are within your skill set, versus those you’ll need to practice.

The purpose of this post is to turn that overwhelm on it head and instead make it exciting!

Tip: many bujo techniques are quite simple to master!

Once you have some inspiration to work with, you’ll most likely be keen to get started.

Which Pages Should I Include in My Bullet Journal Theme?

It’s up to you!

Here are some popular pages often included within a monthly setup, each of which would follow the monthly theme:

1. Cover Page

This might be a single or double page which displays the name of the month and defines your theme. Often a small calendar will also be included somewhere on the cover page, and perhaps a relevant quote.

Once you’ve selected your preferred bullet journal monthly cover page idea, you can then choose which elements of the design to bring to each section for that month.

For example, you might focus on some or all of the following elements to showcase your theme for each of your spreads…

  • Headers

You might simply create the same header design for each layout, using consistent fonts and colours.

  • Quotes

Similarly to headers, quotes can follow a design using the same fonts, colours, and backgrounds.

  • Illustrations

If you’re using doodles to represent a holiday or season, you can use the same or similar doodles on each of your spreads for the month.

2. Monthly Spreads

Depending on your preference, and particularly if you include a mini calendar on your bujo cover page, you may choose not to create a monthly spread as well.

However, they’re a very popular spread to give you a quick and easy overview of the month ahead, and they’re a great place to note down birthdays, anniversaries, and other important dates or appointments.

3. Weekly Spreads

If you have bullet journal spreads for every week of the month, you may choose to draw out weekly spread ideas using the same layout.

What Other Pages Should I Apply My Bullet Journal Theme To?

Again, it’s up to you. Essentially, if you choose to use a theme for the entire month, then you can simply include any and every page in your monthly setup, if you wish. These pages may include:
